Hindu temples, known as mandirs, are considered the earthly dwelling places of gods and goddesses. Their architecture follows ancient Vedic principles outlined in texts like the Shilpa Shastras, with every element — from the towering gopurams (gateway towers) to the inner sanctum (garbhagriha) — designed to represent the cosmic order. Temples serve as centers for daily puja (worship), elaborate festivals, and community gatherings. India alone is home to millions of temples, from the ancient rock-cut caves of Ellora to the modern Akshardham complexes. Hindu temple architecture has also flourished across Southeast Asia, producing UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Prambanan in Indonesia and Angkor Wat in Cambodia.
