Forty Years in the Wilderness

French Saints waited 40 years for a temple, likening their patience to the biblical wandering in the wilderness.

For four decades, the Latter-day Saints of France lived with the knowledge that the nearest temple was hundreds of miles away. The Swiss Temple in Zollikofen, dedicated in 1955, was the closest, but reaching it required long journeys across international borders — a particular hardship for French members with limited means. As the Church grew in France through the 1960s and 1970s, the longing for a house of the Lord on French soil became a defining spiritual aspiration of the community.

The parallels to the biblical account of the children of Israel were not lost on French members. They spoke openly of their "forty years in the wilderness," a phrase that captured both the length of the wait and the spiritual discipline it required. For families who saved for years to afford a single trip to the Swiss Temple, the dream of a French temple was more than convenience — it was a matter of spiritual identity and belonging.

When the temple was finally announced in 1998, the journey to realization was far from smooth. Finding a suitable site near Paris proved exceptionally difficult in a country where secularism (laïcité) is a constitutional principle and religious buildings face intense scrutiny. The chosen location — Le Chesnay, a commune adjacent to the Palace of Versailles — initially met with resistance from local officials and residents unfamiliar with the faith.

The turning point came during the city council review process. The Church's presentations about its beliefs and practices impressed members of the council, with one reportedly remarking that it was "the closest church to the church of Jesus Christ that we have ever heard of." The mayor of Le Chesnay ultimately became a supporter, and the temple was approved. When the Paris France Temple was dedicated on May 21, 2017, the forty-year wilderness journey of the French Saints reached its promised land.
