The Life of Prophet Muhammad

A comprehensive overview of the Prophet's life, teachings, and legacy, shaping the foundations of Islam.

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), born in Mecca around 570 CE, is the founder and central prophet of Islam, regarded by Muslims as the final messenger of God (Allah). His life and teachings transformed the Arabian Peninsula and eventually much of the world, establishing one of the largest and most influential religions in human history with nearly two billion adherents today.

Born into the Quraysh tribe, Muhammad was orphaned at a young age and raised by his grandfather and later his uncle, Abu Talib. He became known as "Al-Amin" (the Trustworthy) and "As-Sadiq" (the Truthful) for his honesty and integrity. At the age of 25, he married Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, a successful merchant and his first wife, who would become a pillar of support throughout his mission.

In 610 CE, at the age of 40, Muhammad received his first divine revelation from Allah through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) in the Cave of Hira on Mount Nur near Mecca. These revelations, received over a period of 23 years, were compiled into the Quran — Islam's holy scripture. Muhammad's message of monotheism, social justice, and moral accountability challenged the polytheistic society of Mecca, leading to years of persecution against him and his followers.

In 622 CE, Muhammad and his followers undertook the Hijrah (migration) to Medina, where he established the first Muslim community and built Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque). From Medina, he united the warring tribes of the Arabian Peninsula under the banner of Islam through a combination of diplomacy, alliances, and military campaigns. In 630 CE, he returned to Mecca in a largely peaceful conquest, cleansing the Kaaba of its idols and establishing Mecca as the spiritual center of Islam. He passed away in 632 CE in Medina and was buried in the chamber adjacent to the mosque he built, now marked by the iconic Green Dome.
