The Surrender of Jerusalem

The historic 1917 event that marked the end of Ottoman rule and the beginning of the British Mandate.

On December 9, 1917, a pivotal moment in the history of the Middle East unfolded in Jerusalem. After four centuries of Ottoman rule, the city was surrendered to British forces led by General Edmund Allenby.

The initial surrender was offered by the mayor of Jerusalem, Hussein al-Husayni, to two British sergeants near the village of Lifta. However, the formal diplomatic transfer of power required higher authority. The surrender was eventually accepted and formalized at the Bishop's House within the St. George's Cathedral close.

Two days later, on December 11, General Allenby made his formal entry into the Old City through the Jaffa Gate. In a gesture of profound respect for the holy city, he dismounted his horse and entered on foot, contrasting sharply with the pomp of Emperor Wilhelm II's entry in 1898.

The event at St. George's Cathedral marked the beginning of the British Mandate era. Today, the cathedral remembers this event not as a military conquest, but as a moment of transition that placed the Anglican church at the center of Jerusalem's modern history.
